Why create interlinked websites?

Links help your Google rank. To have a dedicated landing page on a different domain that links to a part of your main website can help boost your Google rank of your main site. A landing page website can allow you to target a specific type of audience, specific keywords, specific type of action from your main website. A landing page and separate domain is also handy as a direct link for your customers when running targeted marketing campaigns (such as a QR code, competition, sale etc).

Cross linking your own sites is OK as long as it is for the purpose of helping your readers find content that they might like, and not exclusively to increase the overall PageRank of your website.

You should add an extra layer of caution on the interlinking process, even if done with legitimate purposes in mind. Why? Because it will be a Google bot taking a look at your sites and determining if the cross linking is suspicious or not. If for some reason the computer finds that your links are suspicious, you might get a penalty.
